Stuck in Minnesota Snow? What to Do Before Calling a Tow
Safer ways to handle a vehicle stuck in snow or ice, and what to tell the tow operator in Prior Lake and the south metro.
Start with your safety
If you are stuck near moving traffic, prioritize getting out of danger over freeing the vehicle. Turn on hazard lights when appropriate. If you are on a busy roadway or in a dangerous location, contact emergency services or the appropriate roadside authority.
Clear the exhaust and check the surroundings
Before running the engine while stuck in deep snow, make sure the tailpipe is not blocked. A blocked exhaust can allow carbon monoxide to build up. Check for snow packed around the tires, underbody and bumper.
Use gentle traction, not full throttle
If the vehicle is stable and you can safely try to move it, clear snow from the drive wheels and try gentle acceleration. Spinning tires aggressively can dig the vehicle deeper, overheat components or make traction worse. Consult the owner’s manual for your drivetrain and traction-control settings.
Know when to stop trying
If the car is high-centered on snow, in a ditch, sliding toward traffic, or making unusual noises, stop. Improvised recovery with ropes or tow points can damage vehicles or injure bystanders. Professional recovery equipment is often the safer choice.
What to tell a towing company
Share your exact pickup location, nearby landmarks, vehicle make and model, whether it is all-wheel drive, whether it rolls or steers, and whether it is in a ditch or snowbank. Photos can help the operator understand the situation.
